The Best Short-Haul Destinations from Manchester

Short-haul accounts for most of MAN's traffic. Jet2, Ryanair and easyJet between them run the majority of flights, with British Airways on the LHR shuttle and KLM and Lufthansa for connections.

Dublin, the most booked route

Dublin is Manchester's single busiest short-haul route, with roughly 64 flights a week split across Ryanair, Aer Lingus and Ryanair UK. Flight time is about 1h 15m and it runs from before breakfast until mid-evening. Perfect for a weekend or a connection.

Amsterdam

KLM and easyJet do around 54 weekly flights to Schiphol. KLM is the smarter choice if you are connecting onward, easyJet if you just want to get to Amsterdam cheaply.

Alicante, Palma and Malaga

The three big Iberian holiday routes. Alicante has about 41 flights a week, Palma 27 and Malaga 25. All served heavily by Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet and TUI. Flight time is 2h 30m to 2h 50m.

Paris CDG, Barcelona and Copenhagen

Good choices if you want a city break. Paris is about 41 flights a week on Air France and easyJet, Barcelona 32 on Vueling, easyJet, Ryanair and Jet2, Copenhagen 22 on SAS, Norwegian Air Sweden, Ryanair and easyJet.

London Heathrow shuttle

Around 32 daily flights on BA. Almost all are connections, if you are genuinely going to central London, the Avanti train to Euston is usually better value and faster door-to-door.

Belfast

Manchester has two Belfast routes: BFS on easyJet and Ryanair UK (31 weekly) and BHD (City airport, closer to the centre) on Aer Lingus Regional and easyJet (26 weekly). Under an hour either way.

Underrated Routes from Manchester

Aberdeen with Loganair

Loganair run about 15 weekly flights to Aberdeen. It is a proper Scottish commuter route, and for anyone visiting Royal Deeside or the Speyside distilleries, far easier than the train.

Isle of Man

About 13 weekly flights on easyJet and Loganair. Under an hour in the air and the Isle of Man is an underrated short-break destination, TT Course, kippers, beautiful coast.

Southampton

Loganair run roughly 13 flights a week to Southampton. A sensible choice for the south coast, New Forest and anyone connecting onward to the Channel Islands.

Venice Marco Polo

About 14 weekly flights on easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair. One of the best city breaks in Europe, and genuinely better in shoulder season than in August.

Krakow

Krakow John Paul II runs 12 flights a week on Ryanair, Jet2 and easyJet. An excellent-value weekend away, and a sobering half-day trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau is possible from the city.

Dalaman

14 weekly flights on SunExpress, easyJet, Jet2 and TUI Airways. Turquoise Coast, genuine summer sunshine into November, and usually cheaper than equivalent Spanish resorts.

When to Fly From Manchester

Sunshine flights

Mallorca, Alicante and Malaga are busy May to October. Canary Islands work all year. For the best price on a Jet2 package, book the first week of January, that is when most of their summer prices are cheapest.

City breaks

Late April to early June and all of September are ideal. August is genuinely too hot for Rome and Barcelona.

Long-haul

Dubai, Doha and Orlando are busiest December and July/August. For the USA, shoulder seasons (April to May and late September to early October) give you good weather and cheaper tickets.

Terminal timing

Terminal 1 (Ryanair departures) and Terminal 2 (everyone else) can both get busy around 5am to 7am on summer Saturdays. Arrive 2 to 2.5 hours early for short-haul, 3 hours for long-haul.
