Where to Fly from London Heathrow airport in 2026

If you are flying out this year and want inspiration, here is our honest pick of the best routes from Heathrow, the short-haul classics, the bucket-list long-hauls, and a handful of places most people overlook.

Everything below is based on what actually flies, drawn from our live Heathrow destinations page. Times quoted are approximate scheduled flight durations.

The Best Short-Haul Destinations from Heathrow

Heathrow is a European powerhouse. Around three quarters of its daily departures are short-haul, and if you are after a long weekend or a week in the sun, the choice is extraordinary.

Dublin, the everyday classic

Dublin is one of Heathrow's busiest short-haul routes, with frequent daily flights on Aer Lingus and British Airways. Flight time is about 1h 25m. Perfect for a spontaneous weekend, and the easy border means you can be in a Temple Bar pub within three hours of leaving home.

Amsterdam, the civilised mini-break

KLM and British Airways split most of the Schiphol flights, and it is genuinely one of the best cities in Europe for a short break. You can fly in the morning, cycle the canals by lunchtime, see a Vermeer, and be back on the plane the next evening.

Paris Charles de Gaulle

Around 45 departures a week to CDG on Air France and British Airways. Yes, the Eurostar from St Pancras is often easier for central Paris. But if you are connecting beyond Paris or live closer to Heathrow, flying still wins.

Madrid and Barcelona

Two of Spain's biggest cities, with excellent service on Iberia, Vueling and BA. Madrid is the politics-and-museums choice, Barcelona is the Gaudi-and-beach one. Both are under three hours in the air.

Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich

The Germanic trio. Lufthansa and BA between them run dozens of daily flights. Frankfurt and Munich are big financial hubs, Zurich is the base for skiing in the winter. Geneva is another easy one, roughly 40 daily flights, and the gateway to Chamonix and the Alps.

Rome Fiumicino

ITA Airways and BA make FCO one of the most booked Italian routes from Heathrow, with about 38 flights a week. Lisbon and Copenhagen also deserve a mention, both run by TAP Air Portugal and SAS respectively, and both excellent value for a city break.

Long-Haul Highlights from Heathrow

This is where Heathrow really earns its stripes. Very few European airports come close to the long-haul network here.

New York (JFK and Newark)

JFK is Heathrow's single busiest overseas route. Seven airlines, including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, Delta and JetBlue, serve it daily. Newark adds another thirty-odd weekly flights through United and BA. Flying time is around 7h 45m eastbound (home) and 8h 30m westbound.

Los Angeles and Chicago O'Hare

Los Angeles runs roughly 30 flights a week on BA, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines and United. Chicago O'Hare is the Midwest hub, also about 34 weekly departures. Both are classic holiday and business routes.

Delhi and Mumbai

Heathrow's India network is one of the deepest in Europe. Air India, IndiGo, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways all fly daily to Delhi and Mumbai. Roughly 9 hours each way. Book well ahead for Diwali and Christmas.

Istanbul

Turkish Airlines and BA run about 32 weekly flights. Istanbul itself is brilliant for a stop-off, but IST is also one of the world's great connecting hubs if you are heading to Central Asia or East Africa.

Doha, Dubai and beyond

Not in the top 30 by frequency but worth a mention because of their onward reach. A Qatar flight from Heathrow via Doha can get you to Cape Town, Perth or the Maldives in a single connection.

Underrated Routes from Heathrow

Everyone books Paris and New York. These are the ones we think you should consider instead.

Nice

The Cote d'Azur in under two hours. BA fly there about 26 times a week. Monaco, Cannes, Antibes are all within 40 minutes of the airport. Brilliant in late spring before the crowds.

Athens

Heathrow to Athens is a roughly 3h 45m flight on Aegean or BA. Most people book Athens as an island-hopping gateway, fair enough, but the city itself is having a serious moment for food and design.

Vienna

Austrian Airlines and BA fly Vienna around 27 times a week. Beautiful in every season, exceptional Christmas markets, and an easy launching pad for Salzburg and Budapest.

Oslo and Stockholm

Scandinavia is criminally underbooked from Heathrow. Oslo Gardermoen has about 24 weekly BA and SAS flights, Stockholm Arlanda around 29. Long summer days, aurora-ready winter skies, and genuinely lovely cities.

Lisbon

Often cheaper than Paris or Amsterdam, and sunnier than both for most of the year. TAP and BA make LIS easy from Heathrow.

When to Fly From Heathrow

Short-haul sweet spots

Shoulder seasons are king. Late April to mid-June and the whole of September give you good weather across Europe, cheaper fares and fewer crowds. January and February are the cheapest months overall, but check weather at destination.

Long-haul sweet spots

USA East Coast, autumn for New England colour, early January for cheap tickets. India, October to March is dry season, avoid May and June for heat. Southern hemisphere, our winter is their summer, so December and January are peak and pricey; May and September are the shoulder.

Times of day to avoid

7am to 9am Monday morning and 4pm to 7pm Friday evening are the two worst windows for security queues. If you can fly mid-morning or late afternoon mid-week, you will sail through.
